About

HBCU Access NYC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness, access, and opportunities for New York City students to attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

We empower students from underrepresented communities by providing the resources, knowledge, and support they need to pursue higher education at HBCUs, institutions known for their rich history, cultural impact, and commitment to producing leaders in various fields.

We believe all students can embrace who they are,
can define their future, and can change the world.

Our Mission

Our Mission

To raise awareness of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) among K-12 students, families, and schools in New York City, providing access to higher education opportunities. We aim to empower students with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to pursue higher education at HBCUs and create pathways for academic and economic success.

Students

Why We Exist

Despite representing only 3% of U.S. colleges and universities, HBCUs produce nearly 20% of all Black college graduates, making them unparalleled engines of opportunity and success. However, in New York City, the largest public school system in the nation (enrolling 900,000+ students annually), where Black students account for roughly 31,000, only about 16% (5,000) of Black high school graduates annually consider or apply to HBCUs even though HBCUs provide culturally affirming environments, higher graduation rates, and significant economic mobility—yielding nearly $1 million more in lifetime earnings for their graduates compared to peers from non-HBCUs.

This gap highlights the need for greater awareness and access.
